The Legacy of Chris Cowan
Chris Cowan was the other co-founder of NVCC. His 1996 book Spiral Dynamics: Mastering Values, Leadership and Change, based on Dr. Clare W. Graves’ emergent cyclical levels of existence theory, helped popularize the term Spiral Dynamics and its applications to leadership and management. After Chris received his Master’s degree in speech communications from the University of North Texas in 1972, he joined the faculty there and taught communications, group dynamics and media in business. But his focus eventually shifted to the extension and application of Dr. Graves’ theory and models to the corporate setting. Over 10 years, Chris spent many hours with Dr. Graves in presentations and workshops, and left the NTSU faculty in 1981 to devote his energies to the application of Gravesian theory in organizations and government. Cowan continued to collaborate with Graves until Graves’ death in 1986. He developed the first Spiral Dynamics programs and tools during that period. Cowan first co-founded National Values Center Inc., in 1978 and then co-founded NVC Consulting with partner Natasha Todorovic in 1998, working to further Gravesian theory training and applications until his death in 2015.
