About Us

NVC Consulting is the source of, and delivers, SPIRAL DYNAMICS® trainings, programs, assessments, materials, insights, and real-world applications of Dr. Clare W. Graves’ work to a wide audience in business, education, government, not for profit, and community services. We help organizations master the challenges of leadership development, managing diversity, congruent change approaches, conflict, strategy, sustainability, organizational development, coaching approaches, culture, and systems transformation.

NVC Consulting (NVCC) grew out of the National Values Center, Inc. (started in 1978), and continues to focus today on extending and applying the original work of Dr. Clare W. Graves, as well as other systems and developmental theorists. From its beginnings, NVCC has been helping people and organizations to think in new and better ways about the human factors impacting all areas of our lives since 1998.

Our projects include work in helping clients to deal with shifts in values and ethics, leadership and management development, disaster operations preparedness, closing the gaps in quality programs, responding to diversity within communities and organizations, strategic foresight and futures planning, marketing and message development, as well as many programs for social workers and educators, as well as for corporate trainers, executive coaches and organization development consultants.

In addition to SPIRAL DYNAMICS® consulting services and programs, NVCC delivers in-depth certification and application training around the world in adult development, human systems, and particularly Gravesian theory and models. With close to 100 SDL1 & 2 Trainings delivered on 5 continents, we have a track record of success. Our courses help participants explore, understand, and apply the foundational theory and powerful resources of these models. We offer a range of educational materials, wisdom from ongoing research, as well as access to assessments and learning tools to support your goals and activities.

NVC Consulting is based in Santa Barbara, California, and has affiliates in the United States, Europe, Australia, South Africa, South America, Russia, and elsewhere.

    I completed Spiral Dynamics Levels 1 and 2 training with Chris and Natasha in Melbourne, Australia (2007). Natasha is an amazing educator and facilitator. I was deeply impressed by her subject matter expertise in Clare Graves’ Levels of Existence Theory, the accompanying models, adult development and human epistemology. Natasha is able to generate rich insights into individual and organisational dynamics which certainly supported my capacity as an effective management consultant. Chris Cowan (1946-2015)


Chris Cowan’s work concentrates on the alignment of people, technologies, leadership and management systems through applications of SPIRAL DYNAMICS® programs and Gravesian-oriented developmental models.

Chris received his master’s degree in speech communications from the University of North Texas in 1972. He subsequently joined the faculty and taught in the fields of communication, group dynamics and media in business. At the same time, he was involved in the university’s off-campus professional development programs in business, social services, law enforcement and environmental quality. Clients included accounting firms, social services agencies, law enforcement agencies, city administrators, school districts and federal government entities.

Cowan was teaching communication when his focus shifted entirely to the extension and application of Dr. Clare W. Graves’ emergent cyclical Levels of existence theory and models. Over 10 years, Chris had the privilege of spending many hours with Dr. Graves in presentations, workshops and with him in his home before he died in 1986.

In 1981, he left the faculty of NTSU (now UNT) to devote full energy to the application of Dr. Clare W. Graves’s “emergent, cyclical, levels of existence point of view.” He co-founded the National Values Center Inc., and then co-founded NVC Consulting with his partner, Natasha Todorovic. He is co-author of the 1996 book, Spiral Dynamics: Mastering Values, Leadership and Change, and co-editor of Graves: Levels of Human Existence and The Never Ending Quest: Clare W. Graves Explores Human Nature.

Cowan’s emphasis is on making the material in SPIRAL DYNAMICS® programs practical, applicable and deliverable to a wide range of groups that are seeking results at the bottom line, the top line and the complicated and often overlooked human factors in between.

Natasha Todorovic

Natasha consults, coaches and trains worldwide for clients in a variety of industries using the models and approaches she also teaches in Spiral Dynamics® programs, including the Gravesian theories and models, and other related technologies.

Natasha’s expertise includes executive coaching, training and development at all levels of management. She has been working with Gravesian models since 1991 and has more than 20 years of experience in a broad range of positions and industries, including marketing in the high technology sector; retail and outside sales in products and services; consulting and training; and production, product development, marketing and merchandising in garment and textile manufacturing.

Natasha earned a master’s degree in business administration from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, graduating with honors. She also holds a doctor of clinical hypnotherapy degree with a focus in accelerated learning, and is certified in the Adizes Methodology, a powerful corporate transformation process.

Natasha is co-editor of Graves: Levels of Human Existence and The Never Ending Quest: Clare W. Graves Explores Human Nature. She has been co-training the SPIRAL DYNAMICS® Levels 1 and 2 programs with Chris Cowan since 1998. She is currently co-developing the SPIRAL DYNAMICS® Level 3 program after three years of research into how people learn, understand, and conceptualize the material she teaches with Chris Cowan.

Natasha joined the National Values Center as a partner in 1998 and is also co-founding partner in NVC Consulting in 1999.
